 jyāyasī cet karmaṇas te
matā buddhir janārdana
tat kiṁ karmaṇi ghore māṁ
niyojayasi keśava

Translation: Arjuna said: O Janārdana, O Keśava, why do You want to engage me in this ghastly warfare, if You think that intelligence is better than fruitive work?

Date: Nov 8th  2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

This week we will be discussing from Srimad Bhagavath Gita Chapter 2 and text 72.  Please try to come on time.BG: 2.72:

eṣā brāhmī sthitiḥ pārtha
naināṁ prāpya vimuhyati
sthitvāsyām anta-kāle ’pi
brahma-nirvāṇam ṛcchati

Translation: That is the way of the spiritual and godly life, after attaining which a man is not bewildered. If one is thus situated even at the hour of death, one can enter into the kingdom of God.

Discussion Topics:

  •  One can attain Kṛṣṇa consciousness or divine life at once, within a second – or one may not attain such a state of life even after millions of births. It is only a matter of understanding and accepting the fact.
  • Nirvāṇa means ending the process of materialistic life.
  • Bhagavad-gītā teaches that actual life begins after the completion of this material life.
  • Before ending this life, if one fortunately becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious, he at once attains the stage of brahma-nirvāṇa. There is no difference between the kingdom of God and the devotional service of the Lord.
  • To be engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord is to have attained the spiritual kingdom.
  • In the material world there are activities of sense gratification, whereas in the spiritual world there are activities of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
  • Attainment of Kṛṣṇa consciousness even during this life is immediate attainment of Brahman, and one who is situated in Kṛṣṇa consciousness has certainly already entered into the kingdom of God.
  • Brahman is just the opposite of matter. Therefore brāhmī sthiti means “not on the platform of material activities.” Devotional service of the Lord is accepted in the Bhagavad-gītā as the liberated stage (sa guṇān samatītyaitān brahma-bhūyāya kalpate). Therefore, brāhmī sthiti is liberation from material bondage.

Date: Nov 1st  2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

This week we will be discussing from Srimad Bhagavath Gita Chapter 2 and text 71.  Please try to come on time. BG: 2.71:
vihāya kāmān yaḥ sarvān
pumāḿś carati niḥspṛhaḥ
nirmamo nirahańkāraḥ
sa śāntim adhigacchati

Translation: A person who has given up all desires for sense gratification, who lives free from desires, who has given up all sense of proprietorship and is devoid of false ego — he alone can attain real peace.

Discussion Topics:

  •  To become desireless means not to desire anything for sense gratification. In other words, desire for becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious is actually desirelessness.
  • To understand one's actual position as the eternal servitor of Kṛṣṇa, without falsely claiming this material body to be oneself and without falsely claiming proprietorship over anything in the world, is the perfect stage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
  • One who is situated in this perfect stage knows that because Kṛṣṇa is the proprietor of everything, everything must be used for the satisfaction of KṛṣṇaArjuna did not want to fight for his own sense satisfaction, but when he became fully Kṛṣṇa conscious he fought because Kṛṣṇa wanted him to fight.
  • For himself there was no desire to fight, but for Kṛṣṇa the same Arjuna fought to his best ability. Real desirelessness is desire for the satisfaction of Kṛṣṇa, not an artificial attempt to abolish desires. The living entity cannot be desireless or senseless, but he does have to change the quality of the desires.
  • A materially desireless person certainly knows that everything belongs to Kṛṣṇa (īśāvāsyam idaḿ sarvam), and therefore he does not falsely claim proprietorship over anything.
  • This transcendental knowledge is based on self-realization — namely, knowing perfectly well that every living entity is an eternal part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa in spiritual identity, and that the eternal position of the living entity is therefore never on the level of Kṛṣṇa or greater than Him.
  • This understanding of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the basic principle of real peace.

Date: Oct 25th 2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

This week we will be discussing from Srimad Bhagavath Gita Chapter 2 and text 70.  Please try to come on time.
BG: 2.70: āpūryamāṇam acala-pratiṣṭhaḿ
samudram āpaḥ praviśanti yadvat
tadvat kāmā yaḿ praviśanti sarve
sa śāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī

Translation: A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires — that enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is always still — can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires.

Discussion Topics:

  • Although the vast ocean is always filled with water, it is always, especially during the rainy season, being filled with much more water. But the ocean remains the same — steady; it is not agitated, nor does it cross beyond the limit of its brink.
  • That is also true of a person fixed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. As long as one has the material body, the demands of the body for sense gratification will continue.
  • The devotee, however, is not disturbed by such desires, because of his fullness. A Kṛṣṇa conscious man is not in need of anything, because the Lord fulfills all his material necessities.
  • Therefore he is like the ocean — always full in himself. Desires may come to him like the waters of the rivers that flow into the ocean, but he is steady in his activities, and he is not even slightly disturbed by desires for sense gratification.
  • That is the proof of a Kṛṣṇa conscious man — one who has lost all inclinations for material sense gratification, although the desires are present. Because he remains satisfied in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, he can remain steady, like the ocean, and therefore enjoy full peace.
  • Others, however, who want to fulfill desires even up to the limit of liberation, what to speak of material success, never attain peace. The fruitive workers, the salvationists, and also the yogīs who are after mystic powers are all unhappy because of unfulfilled desires.
  • But the person in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is happy in the service of the Lord, and he has no desires to be fulfilled. In fact, he does not even desire liberation from the so-called material bondage.
  • The devotees of Kṛṣṇa have no material desires, and therefore they are in perfect peace.

Date: Oct 18th 2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

This week we will be discussing from Srimad Bhagavath Gita Chapter 2 and text 69.

 BG: 2.69:
 niśā sarva-bhūtānāḿ
tasyāḿ jāgarti saḿyamī
yasyāḿ jāgrati bhūtāni
 niśā paśyato muneḥ

Translation: What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage.

Discussion Topics:

  • There are two classes of intelligent men. One is intelligent in material activities for sense gratification, and the other is introspective and awake to the cultivation of self-realization.
  • Activities of the introspective sage, or thoughtful man, are night for persons materially absorbed.
  • Materialistic persons remain asleep in such a night due to their ignorance of self-realization.
  • The introspective sage remains alert in the "night" of the materialistic men.
  • The sage feels transcendental pleasure in the gradual advancement of spiritual culture, whereas the man in materialistic activities, being asleep to self-realization, dreams of varieties of sense pleasure, feeling sometimes happy and sometimes distressed in his sleeping condition.

The introspective man is always indifferent to materialistic happiness and distress. He goes on with his self-realization activities undisturbed by material reactions.

Date: Oct 4th 2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

 BG: 2.65:prasāde sarva-duḥkhānāṁ
hānir asyopajāyate
prasanna-cetaso hy āśu
buddhiḥ paryavatiṣṭhate

Translation: For one thus satisfied [in Kṛṣṇa consciousness], the threefold miseries of material existence exist no longer; in such satisfied consciousness, one’s intelligence is soon well established.

BG: 2.66: nāsti buddhir ayuktasya
na cāyuktasya bhāvanā
na cābhāvayataḥ śāntir
aśāntasya kutaḥ sukham

Translation: One who is not connected with the Supreme [in Kṛṣṇa consciousness] can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. And how can there be any happiness without peace?

Date: Sep  20th  2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

 BG: 2.67: indriyāṇāḿ hi caratāḿ
yan mano 'nuvidhīyate
tad asya harati prajñāḿ
vāyur nāvam ivāmbhasi

Translation: As a strong wind sweeps away a boat on the water, even one of the roaming senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man's intelligence.

Discussion: Unless all of the senses are engaged in the service of the Lord, even one of them engaged in sense gratification can deviate the devotee from the path of transcendental advancement.

As mentioned in the life of Mahārāja Ambarīṣa, all of the senses must be engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, for that is the correct technique for controlling the mind.

BG: 2.68: tasmād yasya mahā-bāho
nigṛhītāni sarvaśaḥ
indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas
tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā

Translation:Therefore, O mighty-armed, one whose senses are restrained from their objects is certainly of steady intelligence.

Discussion: One can curb the forces of sense gratification only by means of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, or engaging all the senses in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.

As enemies are curbed by superior force, the senses can similarly be curbed, not by any human endeavor, but only by keeping them engaged in the service of the Lord.

One who has understood this — that only by Kṛṣṇa consciousness is one really established in intelligence and that one should practice this art under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master — is called sādhaka, or a suitable candidate for liberation.

Date: Sep  27th  2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

This week we will be discussing from Srimad Bhagavath Gita Chapter 2 and text 64. We had a wonderful discussion last week. This week topic is build on last week.

 BG: 2.64:

rāga-dveṣa-vimuktais tu
viṣayān indriyaiś caran
ātma-vaśyair vidheyātmā
prasādam adhigacchati

Translation: But a person free from all attachment and aversion and able to control his senses through regulative principles of freedom can obtain the complete mercy of the Lord.

 Purport:

  • Ø  One may externally control the senses by some artificial process, but unless the senses are engaged in the transcendental service of the Lord, there is every chance of a fall.

  • Ø  Although the person in full Kṛiṣhṇa consciousness may apparently be on the sensual plane, because of his being Kṛiṣhṇa conscious he has no attachment to sensual activities

  • Ø  The Kṛiṣhṇa conscious person is concerned only with the satisfaction of Kṛṣṇa, and nothing else. Therefore he is transcendental to all attachment and detachment.

  • Ø  If Kṛiṣhṇa wants, the devotee can do anything which is ordinarily undesirable; and if Kṛiṣhṇa does not want, he shall not do that which he would have ordinarily done for his own satisfaction.

  • Ø  Therefore to act or not to act is within his control because he acts only under the direction of Kṛiṣhṇa.

  • Ø  This consciousness is the causeless mercy of the Lord, which the devotee can achieve in spite of his being attached to the sensual platform.

This week we will be discussing from Srimad Bhagavath Gita Chapter 2 and text 62 and 63. These verses are very famous verses, such a way that in our daily life we see  and live them practically with these aspects. Krishna explains very systematically and scientifically how a person even with a great intelligence, with pious back ground and wonderful intentions and qualities  still could end up in miserable and abominable situations where he/she regrets after that like: WHY DID I DO THAT?  Lets discuss and learn to over come these propensities for a better and meaningful life.

BG: 2.62:
dhyāyato viṣayān puṁsaḥ
saṅgas teṣūpajāyate
 saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ
   kāmāt krodho ’bhijāyate

Translation:
While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises.

BG: 2.63:
krodhād bhavati sammohaḥ
sammohāt smṛti-vibhramaḥ
smṛti-bhraṁśād buddhi-nāśo
buddhi-nāśāt praṇaśyati

Translation:
From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into the material pool.

Date: Sep  6th  2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishna Das.

BG: 2.60:

                               indriyāṇi pramāthīni
                             haranti prasabhaṁ manaḥ

Translation:
The senses are so strong and impetuous, O Arjuna, that they forcibly carry away the mind even of a man of discrimination who is endeavoring to control them.

BG: 2.61:
tāni sarvāṇi saṁyamya
yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ
vaśe hi yasyendriyāṇi
tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā

BG: 2.59:

viṣayā vinivartante
nirāhārasya dehinaḥ
rasa-varjaṁ raso ’py asya
paraṁ dṛṣṭvā nivartate

Translation:

Though the embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment, the taste for sense objects remains. But, ceasing such engagements by experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness.

5. What is athma, paramathma and its relationship with God

6. Should one listen to inner soul instincts and when?

7. Is devotional path the only path to attain lotus feet of Lord?. Can one take scientific path?

8. Should one focus on only chanting or only doing good services or both?

9. How to know what is good and what is bad from spiritual perspective?. What are the prescribed duties by God?

10. Is humbleness one of a characteristics of devotees?. Can Atheist have humbleness and do good services to humanity and attain Lotus feet of Lord?

Date: May 31st 2014  Speaker: Naveen Krishnadas

1. How was Krishna’s mercy or message is distributed?. Types of Sampradhayas and disciples succession etc,.

Comment: Before we understand how Krishna’s mercy is distributed we have to understand what his mercy is and who is Krishna? God has many names, there are primary and secondary names based on his characteristics and attributes. Govinda – who gives pleasure to cows, Rama – Power house of Pleasure, Achuta – Infallible, Mukunda – who lives liberation etc.. Krishna means all attractive. Any person in this world has any opulence like beauty, or strength, or fame, power, knowledge etc, we naturally get attracted to them. But those opulence’s are temporary, very relative and subjective. God is that person who has all the opulence’s all the time to fullest capacity. He is also merciful and ever well wisher. He is always trying to reach us in many ways to share his opulence’s with his dear children ( all of us) by  inviting us back to kingdom of the Lord but time and immemorial we are rejecting him but wants to have his opulence’s in this material world and wants to enjoy with material body, which is not possible because this material world/body is temporary and we can’t enjoy those opulence’s in absolute sense, anytime we try, it will only bind us with so called flickering happiness but eventually gives us nothing but frustration and suffering since we are trying to enjoy separately from God. To experience real happiness we have to go to spiritual world or live in self realization consciousness in this material world by connecting our soul to Super soul. So God is trying to attract us in many ways, some  times he comes personally and other times he send his representatives, but we are reluctant to follow his instructions but wants his opulence only, this is struggle for existence or also called madness which was caused by ignorance or Avidya, sine we don’t know  who we are, where we come from etc.. but we identify with body and enjoy. Like Ravana wants Sita, Goddess of Fortune but He wants to kill Ram. But God is so kind he is trying and trying and trying to give as many chances as possible thinking we may turn to him .., Like a rain pours water everywhere, it doesn’t matter it falls on ocean, or trees, or rocks etc without any condition. Krishna or God distributes his mercy unconditionally to everyone thru his devotees but most of the people do not recognize since they are covered by Lust, Anger, Greed, Pride, Illusion and Envy but those who are rare, sincere, wants to know God and want to serve God will take his mercy and apply, and also share with others, are actually recipient of his mercy. The meaning of his mercy is to Know God, to Know who we are, to understand our eternal relationship and try to establish that lost relationship and make life as meaningful, also share this gift of his mercy to other, so that they also know God and could go back to Kingdom of God and never return to this material world again. This mercy or knowledge comes down by disciplic succession. There are four authorized sampradayas are given, All are started  by Krishna himself. 1. Sri Sampradaya 1. Rudra Sampradaya 3. Kumara Sampradaya and 4. Madva Sampraday. ISKCON is branch of Madva Gaudiya sampradaya, All these sampradayas share the same absolute knowledge given by Krishna, may be there are few differences how the message was presented depends on time, place and circumstances but the message was never changed and always same.  When ever this line of disciplic succession broken, Krishna again comes down to this material world and reestablish that lineage. He also said this knowledge should be heard, understand and practice with the devotees with humble attitude by genuinely  developing selfless service attitude.

2.     2. Who is Guru and what are different kinds of Gurus?.

Comments: Guru means heavy. He carries the message of God. He is authorized representative of God coming in anyone of the four sapradayas mentioned above. Guru will never add or subtract  the true message of God but presents as it is which he received from his Guru. He thinks himself as postman carrying the message, never take credit but gives the credit and respect he receives back to His Guru or God. When one is serious and sincere to know God, God send Guru to us and Guru will connect us back to God. Guru is not God but representative of God, so he is more important than anybody else. We have mother and father in every life in what ever species of life we were in but only when we enquire sincerely about God, We will be given opportunity to meet Guru, hear from him, serve him and hence could Please him so that we could Please God. There are two kinds of Gurus. 1. Siksha Guru and 2. Diksha Guru

Siksha Guru means who gives as instructions, or helps us guide towards God in favorable way. We can have as many as Siksha Guru’s  we can have, it could be person or nature or ant or any body or anything we could learn. Since God as Paramatma sitting on our heart, knows our desires and guides us in right direction based on our intensity and sincerity. God could speak to us in many ways If we are willing to learn or listen and develop divine qualities

Diksha Guru is the one who connect us to Krishna thru Guru Parampara or disciplic succession via anyone of the sampradayas mentioned above. We can have only one Diksha Guru. Before we accept Guru we can test Guru and vise versa. Once we accept Guru , We should give life and soul to him to serve him and his mission.

 3.     3. What are the different ways to understand the nectar of Bhagavad gita and what is the best way?

Comment: There are many ways to understand Gita  but most efficient process is thru the devotees especially who loves Krishna without envy. Its very powerful and fast process to understand Gita in the association of Krishna devotees in personal aspect. Like in the mood of Arjuna

4.     What is recommended for different Yugas?

Comment: There are four Yugas mentioned in Vedas

Satya Yuga or Kruta Yuga : People are 100% God Consciousness, everything is available to eat, dont have to struggle or work for livelihood. People are peaceful and very powerful with super natural yogic powers. Their life span is 100,000 years. The recommended process for self realization or God Consciousness is Meditation. They usually mediate on personal aspect of God for long time, meaning many years at a time.
